Did you know that Massachusetts has no requirement that massage therapist receive any prenatal training before offering prenatal massage?

After a disastrous prenatal 6 hour "training" offered by my job I knew I needed more. My first real training was Carol Osborn's 32 hour hands-on class held in Rhode Island. Carol is the founder of BodyTherapy Education and is a leader in the prenatal massage world. She has written many books on prenatal massage and over 5,000 therapist have taken her course.

Falling in love with prenatal work I then took the Rebecca Overson Prenatal Massage Specialist course. Rebecca founded Salt Lake City Prenatal Massage and has perfected the art of using the Body Cushion System to safely perform 1,000's of massages to the prenatal population in Salt Lake City. In October, 2022 I was invited to take part in her Level 2 Advanced Skills Maternity Massage Class. This was an amazing 40 hour hands-on class.

I have also studied with Elaine Stillerman, creator of MotherMassage. Elaine is another leader in the massage world and has also written many books on prenatal and postpartum care. In the 1970's she became a pioneer of prenatal massage in New York City. She has been recognized as being the Educator of the Year and has been inducted into many "Halls of Fame".

Lastly, Claire Marie Miller of Chapel Hill, NC is a huge inspiration to me. I have taken her fertility, menopause and aromatherapy classes which include aspects of prenatal massage. I have completed her on-line prenatal massage training and hope to take an in-person course with her in 2022.

I have been invited to join an elite group, The Association of Maternity, Fertility and Pediatric Massage Therapist. This Association is reserved for those who have demonstrated the knowledge, compassion and skills necessary to work with the pre-conception, prenatal and pediatric populations.

I highly enjoyed my 60 minute pre-natal massage with Bethany. It was such a treat at 36 weeks pregnant! Bethany is so sweet and soft spoken and does a great job making you comfortable. If you’re pregnant and you want some deep relaxation - come see Bethany. I already know I’ll be coming back, pregnant or not, and am thinking about giving her massages as a gift in the future.

One of the most beneficial times to enjoy a massage is during pregnancy. While there are a lot of misconceptions about receiving work during pregnancy with a properly trained and educated massage therapist prenatal massage can be safely and effective provided.

During your session you will remain comfortable while laying on your side while positioned with lots of comfortable pillows and cushions. Depending on your needs you may also be in a semi-reclined position for a short amount of time to receive some work to decrease swelling and reduce specific pain you may be experiencing.

Enjoying this work while pregnant offers many benefits including:

  • Reduction of stress

  • Improved circulation

  • Improved posture

  • Decreased swelling

  • Helps sciatica pain
